DORIS ELIZABETH (MCLAUGHLIN) LAWTON was the daughter of William Joseph & Elizabeth Agnes (Dunn) McLaughlin who married on 01 October 1916 in Medfield, Norfolk, MA. Doris was the youngest of their three children. Her siblings were Rita, and William J McLaughlin. A half-sister, Mary Louise Sullivan, was the daughter of Elizabeth A. Dunn and John A. Sullivan who married 21 Aug 1906 in Boston, MA. John died on 4 July 1910 of Consumption just 10 months after his daughter's birth.

Doris grew up in Dorchester, MA and graduated from the Dorchester High School for Girls in June 1941. In High School she was a member of the Red Cross and Forum Clubs, was President of the French Club, and was on the Prom Committee. Her hobby was dancing. Her ambition was to drive an ambulance for the United States. After graduation she worked for the phone company as an operator, and then during World War II, she worked as a welder in the Hingham shipyard.

Doris married on 26 Nov 1945 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA, John Lawton, who she met at the shipyard. At the end of WWII the shipyards experienced large personnel draw-downs because of ship contract cancellations and the huge influx of military personnel returning from the war. Like most war industry working women, mom lost her job at the shipyard. She worked for many years as a waitress. I especially remember her working at the King Midas Diner in Buzzards Bay. After work, she came home and emptied from her apron the tips of nickels, dimes, and quarters onto the table for me to count. She worked hard, and she earned every penny she made! She was the mother of six children; Gerry, Jack, Bill, and Doreen. She lost 2 children prior to childbirth. We lived the early years above the small US Post Office on Depot Street, East Wareham across the railroad tracks from the Onset Station. When the express steam train came by mom would hustle us outside to watch the train pass. Often, a man working in the mail car would wave to us. What a thrill that was.

During the summer months mom put us into the baby carriage and pushed it the 1.5 miles down Onset Ave. to Onset beach. What fun we had there. She always loved the Cape and Patti Page, the Red Sox and Bruins. When she died her wish was to have her remains donated to the Harvard Medical School. After several years at the Harvard Medical School, her remains were cremated and returned to the family. Her ashes were spread in the waters off her favorite beach in Onset, MA by family members with the song by Patti Page, On Old Cape Cod, playing in the background. Rest in peace, Mom, and thank you for the memories. We will always love you. Your children.
