Beloved Mother & Grandmother

Alice Simon Sternberg was born to Belle Toppelberg Simon and Julius Simon on Jan. 18, 1924 in New York City.
She grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, with her brother Joe and sisters Irmalee and Jeanette.

During World War II, she worked as a Nurse Aide volunteer for the Red Cross. On Feb. 17, 1946, she married Sam Sternberg. In the late 60's Alice and Sam relocated to Youngstown, Ohio with their daughters Wendy, Dale, and Jann. She was Grandma Alice to Jeremy, David Cantor, Zachary, Andrew, & Jacob Jones. In the mid 1980's, when they semi-retired, Alice and Sam moved to Los Angeles, California.

Ma loved to read, write, and study history. In her later years she began taking painting and sculpting classes and turned in to a talented artist. She was also a dedicated volunteer at the Jewish Community Center adult daycare program. Most mornings she would walk for exercise, and put on one of the many hats she loved to wear to shade her from the morning sun. Picturing her walking along in those hats, most practical a couple silly, always brings a smile. She was an extraordinarily compassionate person, and had a smile that would light up a room. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.

Alice Simon Sternberg passed away, in Reseda, California, on December 18, 2000. She is survived by her husband, Sam H. Sternberg; three daughters, Wendy Cantor Dobo & her husband Tom, Dale Sternberg & her husband, and Jann Jones & her husband Gary; a sister, Irmalee Perl; and five grandsons, Jeremy, David Cantor, Zachary Jones, Andrew Jones, and Jacob Jones.

Our mother was a wonderful woman who overcame personal obstacles to become the very loving and caring mother and grandmother she grew to be. She had warmth, caring, and a wonderfully silly sense of humor (that we all still share laughter over) that we will always cherish. Both in heart and spirit I often feel her closeness......and treasure those moments. We love and miss her so very much.
