Mattie Pearce graduated from McKeesport Central High School in 1898 and married Challmer Dickson around 1900. She bore three daughters: Melissa, Cree, and Cristy.

Chal was killed in a mill accident shortly after Cristy's birth. The widowed Mattie and her three tiny girls moved in with her parents, John Williams Pearce and Lucy Heayn Pearce, in their home in Port Vue.

After the girls grew up, Mattie and her adult daughters moved to a three-story frame house on Grandview Boulevard in McKeesport. Cristy married and moved away for a time, but came back with her own small child after she herself was widowed.
