The daughter of Mary Pauline Harper and Lemuel Theodore Stein, Nadine was the older of two children. When she was a child her mother developed tuberculosis, which was a serious problem in Howell County. The family moved to Colorado in an attempt to save Pauline's life. After prolonged exposure to her mother, Nadine tested positive for tuberculosis, which caused doctors to significantly minimize time she spent with her mother. After Pauline's death, Nadine became the big sister protector of her younger brother, Don. She signed his Navy enlistment papers for him, because he was too young to enlist, and she knew their father wouldn't sign. She also knew her brother would falsify papers to join if she didn't sign.
