Alfred Lafayette Tinney was born May 30, 1880 in Pope County, Arkansas to Nathan Abner and Amanda Jackson Tinney. He married Lula Mae Yandell January 1, 1907 in Oklahoma. The Tinneys lived in several areas of Oklahoma but finally settled in Checotah. They raised nine children - eight of their own, one who was Mae's nephew.

A.L., as he was commonly known, passed away on January 6, 1970 at the age of 89. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9th in the church of Christ with Vernon Gruver officiating. Burial was under the supervision of Smith Funeral Home of Checotah.

Survivors at the time of his passing included his wife, Mae of the home; three sons: Ernest of Checotah, Earl of Broken Arrow, and John of San Bernardino, California; four daughters: Mrs. Edith Pugh of Muskogee, Mrs. Goldie Kane of Fresno, California, Mrs. Imogene Humphries of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Mrs. Lois Burley of Broken Arrow, OK. Also three brothers: Bryan Tinney of Gans, Alonzo of Muldrow, and John of Longview, Texas; two sisters: Nellie Lang of Seminole and Lura Stevenson of Shawnee. He was survived by thirteen grandchildren.
