James "Roy" Walters was the son of Addison Esley Walters and Martha Ethel Chriswell. He married Hattie Edith Phillips and had three children.
Roy only had a 3rd grade education, but was very intelligent and had excellent math and mechanical skills. He enjoyed woodworking, building magazine racks and cedar chests. He was a quiet man and not easily angered. He seemed to know everyone. He worked in lumber yards for many years, however a stack of lumber fell on him in the late 1950's, leaving him disabled.
How Roy Met Edith: A Depression Era Romance
He went to visit his cousin, Shell Walters, sometime in 1936. Shell was married to Roy's future mother-in-law, Pearl. Roy met Edith, Shell's stepdaughter. The pair hit it off and they agreed to keep in touch. After making the long journey home, Roy fell ill with a severe case of chicken pox and had a very hard time recovering since he was 25 years old, well past the normal age to contact the virus.
When Edith did not hear from Roy, she assumed he had changed his mind and she went on about her business. About a year later, Roy returned and explained what happened.
Despite it being only their second meeting, they were married the next day. Their marriage lasted 47 years, until Roy passed away from bone marrow cancer.
