While traveling by train from Soda Springs, Idaho to Salt Lake City, Utah, Mary Ellen Austin gave birth to her 10th and last child, Ruth. Known as a "7 month baby", her birth wasn't expected for another two months.
Ruth was the 10th child of Thomas Herbert Austin and Mary Ellen Thomas.
Thomas H. Austin, was a sheep rancher in Soda Springs, Idaho. During the harsh winters, the family made their home in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Leaving the business to the Austin son's for a few weeks in the Summer, Thomas, Mary Ellen, Ruth and sisters would head to Santa Monica, California.
In 1923, her father died from a brain aneurysm while working the Sheep ranch in Soda Springs.
1930 was a sad time for the Austin's. Ruth's sister, Mary Thelma Austin Server and her baby daughter, Darlene, were victims of murder by Thelma's estranged husband, Philip. Philip killed himself after he shot his family while they slept in his apartment in Santa Monica, Ca.
Ruth came to Santa Monica, CA. in her 20's and married Jean Frances Hause and raised their Daughter, Helen.
Ruth worked for McDonald Douglas aerospace in santa monica, till her retirement in the early 60's.
After retirement, Ruth and Jean traveled around Europe. When Jean passed in 1975, Ruth continued to travel well into her 80's, passing the travel bug on to her family!
Her ashes were spread in the pacific ocean and with her husband who is buried at greenwood cemetary, san diego, CA, and with her family buired in Lehi, Utah.
Ruth was my Grandma, Nan Nan to her Gr-Grandchildren.
I am ever so grateful to have been the Granddaughter of Ruth, I miss her dearly.
Nan is survived by her Daughter, Helen, 4 Grandchildren, 9 Great Grand childen and 4 beautiful Gr-Great Grand Children, Lila, Noa, Bering and Bodie.
