Edwin Spencer Fitch Answered Last Summons on Monday...Hastings lost one of its oldest and most highly respected citizens in the passing away of Edwin Spencer Fitch on Monday. He had been confined to his bed for the past two years. The day of his passing away marked the sixtieth anniversary of their wedding day.
Edwin Spencer Fitch was born in Auburn, N.Y., December 8th, 1835. His childhood and youth were spent in Ohio and Illinois. In 1856 he came to Minnesota, settling in Meeker County, where he was married to Carrie L. Smith, daughter of Judge A. C. Smith, September 27th, 1860. Two years later, on the outbreak of the Sioux Indians, he came with his wife and son to Hastings, where he lived until his death. He was twice chosen chief marshal of the city, served for many years as deputy sheriff under Stephen Newell and Hugh Connelly.
In January, 1872, he united with the First Presbyterian Church in Hastings, was chosen elder in March, serving until his death, claiming the record for continuous service in one church in the northwest. He was Sabbath school superintendent for twenty-five years, and served as trustee several years. He has been a member of Dakota Lodge No. 7, A. F. & A. M., for over fifty years. He was buried from the church with Masonic services at the grave.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, Julius Edwin, of Albert Lea, and Frank L, of Chicago, and daughter, Mrs. Nellie Rust, of St. Paul. There are nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by three sons; Dan Buck, Harry P, and Jared Buck.
Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian Church at two p.m., yesterday afternoon. Interment at Lakeside.
