Edward Walter was born 28 Jan 1905 in Summer Shade, Metcalfe Co., KY . He was the youngest of the five children of Alonzo Thomas HAGAN and Nancy Elizabeth MURRAY HAGAN.

By his own account, Edward's family was very poor. Edward contracted St. Vitus' dance as a child which kept him out of school for an extended period so that he fell behind the other children. (St. Vitas Dance was the common name for Sydenham Chorea, a movement disorder that occurs with Rheumatic Fever.) After his illness, his parents did not feel that he needed much education, or perhaps that he was not capable of learning much after that. By the time he was fourteen he had stopped attending school and was working full time as a farm laborer.

Edward's older brothers followed a cousin north in search of work. They settled in Bloomington, Indiana where they found jobs at the Showers Furniture Factory. His parents brought the rest of the family north sometime after 1920, coming to Bloomington while Edward was a teenager. By 1930 Edward had begun working at the Showers Factory as well. He worked as a laborer in the Showers Furniture finishing room between 1930 and 1939.

Sometime around 1930 Edward met Dorthy Lingle at a roller skating rink. After receiving her parent's permission they began to date. They were married 14 Mar 1931 in Morgan Co. IN when he was 26 and she was 18. They had a son, Edward Junior, 3 Jan 1933

Unfortunately, Dorothy died on 28 May 1939. She drowned in a Memorial Day boating accident on the White River. Edward was able to swim to safety but three of the five passengers in the boat drowned. Dorothy was 26 years old at the time of her death. She was buried at Gosport Cemetery, Owen Co. IN. Edward Junior lived with his paternal grandparents, Alonzo & Nannie HAGAN, after his mother's death.

A few years later Edward married Wanda Rose WILEY. His new wife had a son, Jack, from a previous marriage. Edward and Wanda had a son, Basil Duane HAGAN in 1942. Edward Junior lived with his father and stepmother for a time, but at some point left home and went to live again with his paternal grandparents. Wanda and Edward later divorced.

In 1958 Edward married Letha BRUMMETT, a divorcee with four adult daughters. They remained married until Letha's death from throat cancer in 1970.

Edward Walter re-married his ex-wife, Wanda, on 1 Jul 1972, but the marriage once again ended in divorce.

Edward lived alone for several years in a senior citizens' apartment complex. He later moved to a convalescent home. Edward passed away on May 28 1988 at the age of 83.
