One of eleven children born in Georgia to Rev. John Thomas and Anna Bishop Singleton, patriarchs of a pioneering family in the C. M. E. church. She was known affectionately as "Adeline" and "Sister A" by her family. She later received her teaching certificate from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. She was employed as a personal secretary of one of the wives of the Rich brothers of the former well known department store chain in the south, Rich's. She was preceded in death by her husband. She was also a member of Atlanta's Butler Street C.M.E. Church. Josephine Johnson departed this life in Atlanta from cancer in 1965.
