Edgar Imon Rutledge was born on 14 December 1913 in McKinney, Texas, to Charles Amos "Charlie" Rutledge and his wife, Arlena Ann McCluskey; he was one of three children. He worked as a fireman for the Mobil Oil refinery in Beaumont, Texas.
Edgar married first Anna Belle Curtis. They had three daughters, Lois Dean, Patsy Ann, and Donna Colleen Rutledge.
Soon after Anna Belle died, Edgar married second Carrie Hazel McAllister, 8 August 1966, but they were quickly divorced.
He married third widowed Marthagene Bihn, 3 May 1968, in Vidor, Texas. They lived in Vidor, then Liberty Hill, Texas, where they taught Sunday school for several years before returning to Vidor.
Edgar died, 13 March 2001, aged 88, in Vidor, Texas. His funeral was held at Maple Crest Baptist Church, where he and Marthagene were members. Edgar was buried with his first wife at Restlawn Memorial Park in Vidor.
Edgar was a kind, gentle man and an amazing grandfather. He saw the world with a childlike wonder and loved to tell stories.
