She was born Nell Christine Green but was always called Sister Nell or Grandma Nell. The daughter of Antonio and Mary Ella Manning Green, she had a sister named Fredonia, who was better known as Aunt Freda.

Nell married Rev. Dan Cleveland and together they founded and ministered the Church In The Barn in El Monte, California for over 45 years beginning in 1937. It was called 'The Church In The Barn' because it began in the hayloft of an old barn.

During WWII she designed a program called "Beds For Buddies" in which over 1500 service men were provided with a home away from home.

In the early 60's she was able to obtain a number of acres of land at Big Bear Lake. The acreage was converted into a summer camp for any and all children who wished to attend. Hundreds of underprivileged children under her direction, were given the opportunity of summer Christian youth camp with little or no charge to them.

Dan and Nell had six children:

Betty Jean (Emmitt Robbins/Sam Chavez/Ken Peters) had two children, Linda and Buddy. (Betty Jean, Ken, Linda, Buddy and Linda's daughter Rhonda are deceased.)
Mary Jayne (Gene Adams) had three children, Darin, Jim and Susan. (Gene, Mary Jayne, and son Jim are deceased)
Lenore/Tuffy (Louis Keifer) had three children, Danny, Trudy and Denny. (Louie and Tuffy are both deceased)
Claude/Sonny (Joan) had five children, Dan, Craig, Robert, Claudia, Cleve, and Jayne. (Sonny and Danny are deceased).
Donnell (Robert Batts/Clarence Henderson) and Robert had five children, Chris, Donald, Brenda, Cynda and Brian. (Donnell, Robert, Clarence and Donald are deceased)
Robert (Candi) had three children, Robin, Honce and Tony. (Robert and Candi are deceased)

I have no idea how many great grandchildren they had but I'm sure that they had quite a few as well as great great and more greats !

Grandma Nell passed away in early 1968 in an auto accident while on her way to Palm Desert with two of her church friends.

The pictures shared here were submitted by me and I have the actual pictures. Others have copied them and put them in their trees on Ancestry.com and do not give proper credit for them.

Nell was my husbands Grandmother and as he was growing up, he spent a lot of time with her.
