The son of John Barnes, MD, and his wife Caroline of Philadelphia.He and his wife had three sons, one died in infancy and the other two became physicians, who practiced in St Louis, Missouri. He came to St Louis in 1841.He started his study of medicine in 1849, attended a course of lectures at the St Louis College in 1849-50. He took a course in the Medical Department of the University of Missouri 1853-54 and 1854-55, and was graduated by that institution in the spring of 1855. He was one of the early St Louisans to cross the plains in 1850 with an ox team via Salt Lake City, Utah to the gold mines of California. He then returned to St Louis in the fall of 1853. When the Civil War broke out he went into the Government Service serving as a Surgeon until the end of the war. He was in charge of many hospitals in St Louis.He attended Officers, Officer's families, men on furloughs, men on detached service and examining the regular army. He also served as a surgeon in the State militia, holding commission of Major on General A.G.Edwards Staff. In 1879 he was appointed to a professorship in the St Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons, and worked with Obstetrics and Diseases women and little children. In 1890 he was elected dean of this institution. He was a member of the St Louis Medical Society of the American Medical Association, Mississippi Valley Association, Missouri State medical Society and Consulting Physician to several State and City Institutions. He was one of the oldest Physicians in St Louis and he died at his home.
