William Duane Huntsman, PhD was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Ohio University, Athens Ohio. He earned his BS in Chemistry from Ohio University in 1947 after serving in the U.S. Navy. He went on to Northwestern University for graduate school and completed his PhD in Chemistry in 1950. He returned to Athens and joined the OU Chemistry Department in 1951.
Dr. Huntsman was awarded Distinguished Professor of Chemistry in 1968, and was chair of the OU Chemistry Department from 1963 to 1968. He had the gift of being an outstanding teacher and was well respected by colleagues and students alike. Dr. Huntsman received the Dean's Outstanding Teaching Award twice (1982 and 1993)as well as the Grasselli Teaching Award in 1991.
He was also an outstanding researcher, with his work focusing in the area of physical-organic chemistry, and specializing in high temperature reactions of certain hydrocarbons.
For those of us who learned organic chemistry from him, he will be in our hearts and minds forever.
