"Mack", as he was affectionately known to relatives and friends, was reported wounded in action on July 22, while participating in enemy combat in the Ho Bo Woods region of South Vietnam. He was listed as missing until July 31, when his wife, Mrs. Shirley Butler Hughes, a native of Dacula, Ga., and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Hughes of Pisgah, were notified of his death.
Assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, Sgt. Hughes has been in the Army since April 1967. He had seen service in Vietnam for less than two months.
Sgt. Hughes was a graduate of Pisgah High School's Class of 1964 and a graduate of Moler Barber College of Atlanta, where he was employed when he entered military service.
Mack was survived by his wife and parents; his grandfather, O. B. Gaither of Chattanooga; a sister, Mrs. O. B. Steele of Birmingham; two brothers, Bobby Hughes of Dawson, Ala., and Frank Hughes of Pisgah.
