William enlisted as a soldier in the Civil War when he was 15, served for three years, and then was a teacher for the rest of his life, serving as a school superintendent and as a dean at a university.

William was an 1878 graduate of Ohio Northern University in Ada, Hardin, Co., Ohio. He was a graduate of the Scientific course and a member of the university's Franklin Literary Society.
He held the following degrees: A.M., M.Ped., M.S., and B.Ped. (M.Ped. and B.Ped. are Master's and Bachelor's in Pedagogy, teaching degrees. The A.M. would be a Master of Arts. The M.S. would be a Master of Science.)
He was a faculty member at the university and served as Dean of the Normal Department from 1904 to 1909.
In 1910, William and his wife moved to Sawtelle, California, an area in west Los Angeles, and William taught in the public schools. He also served on the Draft Board in California during WW I.
In 1920, William, his wife, their daughter Emma, and their son Joe were living in Los Angeles Co., California, on East Sixth Street. They lived at 3543 East Sixth. William's son Joe lived just a few doors down with his wife (Minnie) and their daughter Margaret (age 7).
William's daughter Emma died in June 1923.
William died in September 1924, at the age of 77.
His widow died in October 1936. Their son died in April 1947.

Professor W. F. Hufford, former dean of the O.M.U. Normal School, and resident of Los Angeles since 1910, passed away at his home 3543 E. 6th St., on September 6, after five months serious illness with heart trouble. He was 77 years of age.
Frank Hufford, as he was generally known in Hardin and Allen counties, taught and was engaged in educational work for more than 50 years, beginning his career as a teacher in Allen county at the close of the Civil War. He was superintendent of the Ada union schools and distinguished himself in building up a strong department of education in the University here. He was known and loved by thousands of former students. He was a man of strong character, a tireless worker, and forgetful of himself in his efforts to [unreadable].
Mr. Hufford was born in Hocking county, Ohio, in August 1846 sic. He had a splendid war record, enlisting at the age of 15 and serving for 34 months.
In 1910, wishing to retire from the strenuous work in the Normal college, he moved with his family to Los Angeles, and there taught for several years in the public schools. He also served as a member of the Draft Board in that state during the late war.
Surviving are his wife, Hattie A. Hufford, and one son, Joe, who resided nearby with his wife and little daughter Margaret. N. D. Johnson of Los Angeles and C. W. Johnson of Harrod, brothers-in-law, will mourn his passing as that of a brother.
Funeral services were held at the Church of Flowers, on Sept. 9, conducted by his pastor, Dr. E. E. Holmes of the First M.E. church. Interment at Forest Lawn.

By November 1864, he'd have been at the mouth of White River in Arkansas. Then again to Morganza, and on to Kenner, Louisiana, and Barrancas, Florida, by January 1865. He'd have been part of the Campaign against Mobile, Alabama, in Spring 1865, then marched to Montgomery and Selma, Alabama. From there, to Galveston, Texas.
In July 1865, William was one of many soldiers who were transferred to the 48th Ohio Veteran Battalion. The 48th was created by consolidation of three Ohio infantry regiments. In the 48th, William was assigned to Company D. The men in Company D were from Highland and Perry Counties, Ohio.
His Company assignments in both regiments suggest that William's pre-Civil War connection was to Perry Co., Ohio.
He was back in Ohio by 1870 when, at the age of 23, he was a teacher in Auglaize Township, Allen Co., Ohio. He was single and renting a room in a family home.
In 1871 he married Harriet Adeline JOHNSTON, the 18-year-old daughter of Samuel JOHNSTON and Mary KELSEY.
William and Harriet had three children: Emma O., born in 1872; Bertie, born about 1875; and Joseph J., born May 1882. Their daughter Bertie died before 1900.
William was an 1878 graduate of Ohio Northern University in Ada, Hardin, Co., Ohio. He was a graduate of the Scientific course and a member of the university's Franklin Literary Society.
He held the following degrees: A.M., M.Ped., M.S., and B.Ped. (M.Ped. and B.Ped. are Master's and Bachelor's in Pedagogy, teaching degrees. The A.M. would be a Master of Arts. The M.S. would be a Master of Science.)
He was a faculty member at the university and served as Dean of the Normal Department from 1904 to 1909.
In 1910, William and his wife moved to Sawtelle, California, an area in west Los Angeles, and William taught in the public schools. He also served on the Draft Board in California during WW I.
In 1920, William, his wife, their daughter Emma, and their son Joe were living in Los Angeles Co., California, on East Sixth Street. They lived at 3543 East Sixth. William's son Joe lived just a few doors down with his wife (Minnie) and their daughter Margaret (age 7).
William's daughter Emma died in June 1923.
William died in September 1924, at the age of 77.
His widow died in October 1936. Their son died in April 1947.
One granddaughter survived:
Margaret (Hufford) Fortner.

Former University Professor and Head of Public Schools Answers Call
Professor W. F. Hufford, former dean of the O.M.U. Normal School, and resident of Los Angeles since 1910, passed away at his home 3543 E. 6th St., on September 6, after five months serious illness with heart trouble. He was 77 years of age.
Frank Hufford, as he was generally known in Hardin and Allen counties, taught and was engaged in educational work for more than 50 years, beginning his career as a teacher in Allen county at the close of the Civil War. He was superintendent of the Ada union schools and distinguished himself in building up a strong department of education in the University here. He was known and loved by thousands of former students. He was a man of strong character, a tireless worker, and forgetful of himself in his efforts to [unreadable].
Mr. Hufford was born in Hocking county, Ohio, in August 1846 sic. He had a splendid war record, enlisting at the age of 15 and serving for 34 months.
In 1910, wishing to retire from the strenuous work in the Normal college, he moved with his family to Los Angeles, and there taught for several years in the public schools. He also served as a member of the Draft Board in that state during the late war.
Surviving are his wife, Hattie A. Hufford, and one son, Joe, who resided nearby with his wife and little daughter Margaret. N. D. Johnson of Los Angeles and C. W. Johnson of Harrod, brothers-in-law, will mourn his passing as that of a brother.
Funeral services were held at the Church of Flowers, on Sept. 9, conducted by his pastor, Dr. E. E. Holmes of the First M.E. church. Interment at Forest Lawn.
