University Professor;
Co. G, Ohio 114th Inf.

William enlisted as a soldier in the Civil War when he was 15, served for three years, and then was a teacher for the rest of his life, serving as a school superintendent and as a dean at a university.

On October 29, 1862, he enlisted as a Private in Company G of the Ohio 114th Infantry Regiment. Most of the men from Company G were from Perry Co., Ohio, primarily from Pike Township, Monday Creek Township, and Jackson Township.

On July 24, 1865, he was transferred to Company D, Ohio 48th Infantry Regiment, and he was honorably discharged on September 17, 1865, at Houston, Texas.

Dyer's Compendium tells where William's regiment was during the War. William would have been with Sherman's march against Vicksburg; at Chickasaw Bayou; at the capture of Fort Hindman; in Young's Point, Lousiana. He'd have been at the Battle of Champion's Hill; at Big Black River; at the Siege of Vicksburg. He'd have participated in the Western Louisiana Campaign; been at Matagorda Bay, Texas. By Spring of 1864, William would have been on Matagorda Island, then to Alexandria, Louisiana. He'd have participated in the Red River Campaign and the Expedition to Atchafalaya. By November 1864, he'd have been at the mouth of White River in Arkansas. Then again to Morganza, and on to Kenner, Louisiana, and Barrancas, Florida, by January 1865. He'd have been part of the Campaign against Mobile, Alabama, in Spring 1865, then marched to Montgomery and Selma, Alabama. From there, to Galveston, Texas.

In July 1865, William was one of many soldiers who were transferred to the 48th Ohio Veteran Battalion. The 48th was created by consolidation of three Ohio infantry regiments. In the 48th, William was assigned to Company D. The men in Company D were from Highland and Perry Counties, Ohio.

His Company assignments in both regiments suggest that William's pre-Civil War connection was to Perry Co., Ohio.

He was back in Ohio by 1870 when, at the age of 23, he was a teacher in Auglaize Township, Allen Co., Ohio. He was single and renting a room in a family home.

In 1871 he married Harriet Adeline JOHNSTON, the 18-year-old daughter of Samuel JOHNSTON and Mary KELSEY.

William and Harriet had three children: Emma O., born in 1872; Bertie, born about 1875; and Joseph J., born May 1882. Their daughter Bertie died before 1900.

William was an 1878 graduate of Ohio Northern University in Ada, Hardin, Co., Ohio. He was a graduate of the Scientific course and a member of the university's Franklin Literary Society.

He held the following degrees: A.M., M.Ped., M.S., and B.Ped. (M.Ped. and B.Ped. are Master's and Bachelor's in Pedagogy, teaching degrees. The A.M. would be a Master of Arts. The M.S. would be a Master of Science.)

He was a faculty member at the university and served as Dean of the Normal Department from 1904 to 1909.

In 1910, William and his wife moved to Sawtelle, California, an area in west Los Angeles, and William taught in the public schools. He also served on the Draft Board in California during WW I.

In 1920, William, his wife, their daughter Emma, and their son Joe were living in Los Angeles Co., California, on East Sixth Street. They lived at 3543 East Sixth. William's son Joe lived just a few doors down with his wife (Minnie) and their daughter Margaret (age 7).

William's daughter Emma died in June 1923.

William died in September 1924, at the age of 77.

His widow died in October 1936. Their son died in April 1947.

One granddaughter survived:
Margaret (Hufford) Fortner.

NOTE: Who William's father was remains a mystery. According to William's death record, his father was Solomon Hufford. If Solomon was William's father, it means that Solomon must have had an early first marriage with a wife who died soon after William was born.
