Peter J. "Mr. Nick" Alvanos, of Charleston, entered into eternal rest October 23. He was a young 83 years of age.
Born in Mytelene, Lesvos, Greece, he was the son of John and Athena Leone Alvanos.
He served with heroic distinction in the Greek-English Army from 1942 to 1945. Initially, He served under Field Marshall Sir Bernard Law Montgomery in the Eighth Army in action to repulse Rommel s attack at Alam Halfa in North Africa. He continued to fight at El Alamein, Tunisia, and Sicily. He was wounded twice and was awarded The Cross of Evangelist, Mark, from the Patriarch of Alexandria, Egypt and the Medal of outstanding service and bravery from the Greek Army. In 1944 his battalion played a key role in thwarting the German Planned Assassination of Sir Winston Churchill during his visit to Greece. At the Wars end his Battalion also played an instrumental role in liberating the Greek Government and preventing the Communist take over of his country in 1945.
He was in the grocery business and owner operator of Nick's Superette on the corner of Wentworth and Pitt Street for over 55 years. This is where he became known as "Mr. Nick." The corner store business has evolved from a neighborhood grocery store to the major grocery chains we see today.
He was a neighborhood icon seen daily six days a week. He has seen the likes of many distinguished patrons from General Mark Clark, Mayor Joe Riley's father to the sounds of Coach John Kresse strolling by to pick up a daily newspaper; the names could go on and on.
In 1988, a College of Charleston student/artist by the name of KATA, presented "Mr. Nick" with a portrait of him in the grocery store. He was honored and humbled by her gift.
"Mr. Nick" loved everything in life, from his wife and family to his everyday conversations with whomever came into the store. In his early family years he would take his sons fishing and taught them the art of barbecuing. In his latter years he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. The values that he instilled in his sons are family, hard work, discipline and devotion to God. His sons are proud to have the father they had and can only wish to be half the man he was.
His family and all of those he touched in the community will sadly miss him including his precious, loving wife; Simeone Kaleondgis Alvanos, four sons; Nick P. Alvanos and wife, Terri, of Everette, WA, John M. Alvanos and wife, Brenda and Alke A. Alvanos and wife, Cindi all of Charleston, and Peter J. Alvanos, Jr. and wife, Andrea of Athens, GA, seven grandchildren, Nick, Peter, Christina, Simone, Michelle, Mary, and Tony; sister-in-laws, Cathy Barkas and Melpomene Gabriel; and cousin Antonios Leone of Mytelene, Lesbos, Greece.
