Reverend Junior Ponds, of Walterboro, went home to be with his Precious Savior February 20.
Rev. Ponds was a son of the late Robert Ponds and Annie Nettles Warren.
"Mr. Junior" was educated in Colleton County Schools and was a graduate of both the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Baptist College (now Charleston Southern University).
He served his country during World War II in the United States Army and was wounded during battle and was decorated with the Purple Heart.
In 1987 he retired from the Hampton County Department of Social Services as director. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Walterboro where he was a deacon and member of the Men's Bible Class. His life in the ministry lead him to serve two pastorates at Bethel Baptist Church, he served in Ebeneezer Welcome Baptist Church in Greenville County, the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Walterboro as well as several other Protestant churches in Walterboro and the surrounding communities. He was a former Chaplain for Colleton Regional Hospital and was the Founder of the Guardian Ad Litem program in Colleton County for which he served on the board for five years. His love for writing lead him in 2001 to author the book, "This Is My Story", which tells of his experiences in the ministry.
He was a longtime participant and friend of the Colleton County Memorial Library where he was in the Adult Reading and Discussion Group. He was a member of the Unity #55 Masonic Lodge, was a member for over forty-two years of the American Legion, Post #93, and was a member of the Retired Sate Employees Association.
"Mr. Junior" is survived by his loving wife, Lottie Nettles Ponds; a daughter, Dolores P. Moorer of Summerville; two grandchildren, Heather Leigh Moorer and David Brian Moorer both of Summerville; and a sister, Ida Mae Harbiston of Charleston.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Ann, who died at nine months of age while Rev. Ponds was over seas.
Interment was with United States Army Military Honors.
