A Virtual Cemetery created by James Harry Lawrence

Tragic 1912 auto wreck victims.

On October 6, 1912, nine young men lost their lives when the car in which they were riding left the road and plunged 60 feet into O'Brien's coal yard at 33rd and Master Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. One of those young men was my cousin William Michael Lawrence, Jr. son of my Grand Uncle Bill and Aunt Annie (Carroll) Lawrence. Only by sheer luck did Uncle Bill's other son Thomas escape death by leaving that car a few blocks before to ride in another car.It was a tragic and horrible waste of lives and the city of Philadelphia launched an investigation into how it could have happened. The Philadelphia Inquirer ran several news stories in the days following the accident that gave many of the details of what happened. Not one of these unfortunate young men had been memorialized at Findagrave and so with the passing of 100 years after their deaths I hope that perhaps if nowhere else their short unfulfilled lives will not be forgotten here.
