USS Princeton Disaster of 1844

On December 28th, 1844, the USS Princeton's large cannon "Peacemaker" exploded when it was fired during a demonstration cruise on the Potomac River. Six people, including the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Navy were killed in the blast.
