21st Missouri Volunteer Infantry

The Twenty-first Missouri Volunteer Infantry was formed on December 31, 1861, when Special Order #15 merged the understrength First and Second Northeast Missouri Regiments. It was made of men primarily from the Missouri Counties of Scotland, Knox, Lewis, Schuyler, Clark, and Adair but also included men from nearby Iowa and Illinois counties. The veterans forming the new regiment had gained combat experience suppressing Confederate insurgency in Northeastern Missouri, and many had fought victoriously on Aug. 5, 1861, at Athens, Missouri. Major Battles: Battle of Shiloh, Tenn., April 6-7, 1862; Battle of Iuka, September 19, 1862; Battle of Corinth, October 3-4, 1862; Central Mississippi Railroad Campaign, November 1862 to January 1863; Red River Campaign, March 10-May 22, 1864; Battle of Pleasant Hill, April 9, 1864; Battle of Nashville, December 15-16, 1864; Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely, March 26-April 8, 1865; Assault and capture of Fort Blakely, April 9, 1865. 1,631 men are listed for the 21st at Missouri Archives. Regiment lost during service: 2 Officers and 68 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded, 5 Officers and 234 Enlisted men by disease. Total 309.
