11TH ALABAMA CAVALRY

Also known as the 10th(Burtwell's)Alabama Cavalry Regiment. The 11th was formed by the consolidation of Williams' and Warren's Cavalry Battalions January 14,1865. It was made up of men from Franklin, Lauderdale, Limestone and Morgan counties. It was with Nathan Bedford Forrest at the attacks on Athens(AL), further north up the railroad at Sulphur Trestle and at the fight at Pulaski, Tenn. losing heavily in casualties on the expedition. It was present at the assault on Selma but retired from the trenches as the part held by them was not attacked. The regiment surrendered at Decatur, Ala in May 1865. A faction of the 11th served as an escort company for Gen P.D. Roddey. They were known as Roddey's Bull Pups.
