11TH ALABAMA INFANTRY

The 11th Alabama Infantry Regiment was enlisted at Lynchburg, Virginia June 17,1861. It was made up of men from Bibb, Clarke, Fayette, Greene, Marengo, Perry, Pickens, Tuscaloosa and Washington counties. The regiment wads first under fire at Seven Pines where it lost 9 killed and 49 wounded. It charged the enemy at Gaines Mill and lost 27 killed and 129 wounded. But it was at Frazier's Farm three days later that the 11th and other regiments of the brigade charged across an open field and engaged in a bloody struggle over the enemy's batteries and lost the commanding officers of eight companies and a total of 182 killed and wounded. It lost 25 killed and wounded at 2nd Manassas. At Sharpsburg it lost 35 men. Casualties at Fredericksburg was 12 killed and wounded. It lost 117 killed and wounded at Salem. The 11th was badly cut up at Gettysburg. It lost about 65 men at the Wilderness and Spotsylvania. From the Wilderness to Petersburg, almost constant skirmishing occurred, and from June 22nd to the 30th the loss was about 80 killed and wounded. The 11th was in the column that retook the line broken at the "Crater", losing about 40 men. About 125 men were surrendered at Appomattox.
