She grew up south of Rush Center, graduating from La Crosse High in 1961 and FHSU School of Nursing in 1965. On May 15, 1966, she married Donald Long at Rush Center. They lived in Ellsworth where Margaret worked as a surgical nurse at the Ellsworth hospital for five years, then at Good Samaritan Retirement Center for 38 years, before her retirement in 2008. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Ada O'Donnell Fellowship, Alumni Nurses Association, Willing Workers and Smoky Hill Cattlewomen, all of Ellsworth, a KSU Ahearn Fund member and member of FHSU Nursing Class of 1965.
She is survived by: her husband, Donald; son, Steve of Belleville; daughters, Sandy Lendecker and husband Jim of Salina, Lisa Long (David Markley) of Alma, and Laura Miller of McPherson; brothers, Delbert Nelson and wife Andrea of Great Bend, and Claude Nelson and wife Kathy of Otis; sisters, Opal Roberts and husband Marvin of Shields and Fern Nelson of Everett, Wash.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. with family present 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at the United Methodist Church, Ellsworth, with burial following in the Ellsworth Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the church, in care of the funeral home, PO Box 45, Ellsworth, KS 67439.
