John 'Duma' Coates was born in Massillon, Ohio to parents Johnnie Coates and Christine Redvine. He had three sisters, Pamela, Melody, and Tonya Coates. He was a 1975 graduate of Washington High School and was active on the football team, choirs, men's glee club, and drama club. He attended Ohio State University, Kent State University, and finally Malone College, where he majored in theology. While at Malone, he worked as an orderly at Doctors Hospital. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Specialist 4th Class before receiving a medical discharge in January, 1982.
John had a heart of gold and would do anything to help anyone in need. His calling as an associate minister of the Morning Star United Holy Church in Massillon befitted the good-natured person he was. For those of us who knew him, his gentle and congenial nature will be with us forever. Rest easy Duma, dear friend.
