Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Martin R. Brown Funeral home, Orbisonia the Rev. Belvy C. White and Steven Walker, a friend of the deceased, officiating. Interment will be made in Pleasant Hills Cemetery in Shade Gap.
Born on Oct. 9, 1914 in Neelyton, he was the son of Samuel and Violet (Gamble) Appleby. He was united in marriage to Vera Burket on July 17, 1937 at Winchester, Va.
His wife survives along with one daughter, Georgia Dillard of Shade Gap, Start Route, and one grandaughter, four step-granddaughters, one step-grandson and 12 step great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters; Samuel Appleby of Newburg, Robert J. Appleby of Neelyton, Lindbergh Appleby of Chambersburg, Mrs. Alma Fraker of Newville R.D. and Mrs. Lawanda Miller of Shippensburg R.D. One brother and three sisters preceded him in the death.
He was a member of the Pleasant Hills United Methodist Church in Shade Gap. He was also a member of the Shade Gap Area Fire Co., the Fire Police of Shade Gap and the Memorial Association of the Orbisonia Rockhill American Legion.
He was once employed by General Refractories in Sproul and later at the Letterkenny Army Depot, where he retired in 1975 after 24 years of service. He was a licensed auctioneer for 20 years and was a past deputy sheriff in Huntingdon County,
