LITTLE HENRY NYE RUN OVER AND KILLED WHILE COASTING
Henry Nye, an 8-year-old boy, was run over and killed by a street car at 5:05 o'clock Tuesday evening while coasting on Twenty-fourth, between Binney and Wirt streets. There is a steep embankment by the walk, which is used by the boys of the neighborhood for a toboggan slide. It was while sliding there that the boy was killed. He did not notice the approaching car. Lying flat on his sled, he shot down the incline, over the walk out into the street and under the wheels of the car.
The car was No. 20 of the Hanscom Park line, with W. R. Hull, conductor, and J. H. Proctor, motorman. The car was slowing down for a stop at Wirt street, and the boy with his sled shot under it, between the front and the rear trucks. The car was stopped, with the wheels resting upon the body. The car had to be backed in order to extricate the body.
With but a slight trace of life in his body, the boy was carried into the Kountze Place pharmacy and medical aid summoned, but he died very shortly.
Henry's brother and several boys of the neighborhood were with him when the accident occurred.
An inquest over the remains of Henry Nye is to be held Thursday afternoon.
The lad is the son of Henry H. Nye who was formerly in the claim department of the Union Pacific at this city and later went to Salt Lake with the Rio Grande. He and his family came back from Salt Lake some months ago and he now has a position in the office of the chief engineer at headquarters.
