She was owner and operator of Shepherd Beauty Shop, in Buxton, and later Shepherd's Beauty shop at 1025 13th, Des Moines, Iowa.
She was a member of the AME church in Buxton, and later St. Paul AME Church in Des Moines, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents Clark Martin and Lucy Wiley Martin; one son, Willie Clark Shepherd. She was survived in death by one son Alfred Franklin Shepherd, Sr., sisters, Lena Martin Drayton, Ida Belle Martin, Lucille Martin,
brothers, Charlie Ambrose Martin, James Martin, Joseph Martin, Theodore Martin, Alton Martin, and Noah Martin.
Her grandchildren were, Alfred Franklin, Barbara, William "Billy", Lucy Marie, Floyd Leland, Crystal Annette, and Shari V. Shepherd
