Dorothy Hisako Shima Akaba
July 3, 1922 - Oct. 26, 2012

"Dorothy Hisako Shima Akaba, 90, of Cameron Park, was born July 3, 1922, in Stockton, Calif., and passed away Oct. 26, 2012, in El Dorado Hills, Calif. She grew up in the San Joaquin Delta, the daughter of a celery farmer. She graduated from Sacramento High School in 1940, later attending Humphries Business School. Because she was of Japanese ancestry during World War II she and her family were interned in an Arizona Relocation Camp and then later sent to an Arkansas Camp.

In 1942 Dorothy married Kenji Akaba, a soldier in the 442nd 100th Battalion, while in Camp. At the end of the war they returned to Stockton, Calif., and raised their three children. In 1982 they moved to Cameron Park to be near their daughter, Judy Adair, and their four grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Kenji Akaba; mother, Yaye Fukushima; father, Hatsutaro Fukushima; brothers, Don Shima, Louis Shima and Geochi Shima; and sister, Miyo Shima Akaba. She is survived by two daughters, Judy Akaba-Adair of Cameron Park and Kiyo Morse of Michigan; son, Jack Akaba of Cameron Park; grandsons, Toshi Adair and Nicholas-Tad Adair; granddaughters, Emiko Bigler, Keiko Morse, Midori Adair-Goetz, Tami Morse-Lavine and Markio Adair Singh; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be private."
