Joseph G. Lowe was one of the abolitionists who died in the Lawrence Massacre, also known as "Quantrill's Raid."

He died at age 38 years, 2 months, 10 days. He was a mason, and son of Daniel & Betsey (Phelps). The record at Fitchburg states he died "by suffocation in a well in effort to rescue a friend in P well."

Lowe was enumerated in the 1859 Kansas census living in Lawrence. His household included four members, including two minors, and states that he settled there in March, 1858.

He was reportedly a friend of the mayor who had volunteered to recover bodies of victims from a well without sufficient equipment. While being lowered into the well filled with toxic smoke, the cord snapped and he fell to his death.

He married Sarah Gerry on Nov. 29, 1848.

The surname was alternatively spelled "Low."
