Enlisted at Jefferson near Chicago, Illinois, on 10 September 1861 into Bowen's Battalion of Cavalry attached to the 13th Illinois Infantry; then transferred to the 10th Missouri Cavalry; mustered out on October 11, 1864, at St. Louis, Mo. as a sergeant.

On Feb 11, 1909 a letter he wrote to his cousin John H. Lepley was published in The Republic (Meyersdale, PA). Dennis and his family were living in Gainsborough, Sask., Canada. He talked in the letter about his brothers who went to Canada also, and he mentioned that he had one daughter named Gladys who was 12 years old Sept. 16th 1908.
