C. (Herbert) McGlaughlin started working for the Western Maryland Railroad in 1889, on Section # 13 between Fairfield, Adams County, PA and the Eastern Portal of Jack's Mountain. His Section Foreman and future father-in-law was, L. Calvin Smith. In 1904, C. Herbert became Section Forman of Section #14 from Highfield to the Western Portal of Jack's Mountain, and moved his family from Fairfield, Adams County, PA. to Warren Ave. Highfield, Washington County, MD. L. Calvin Smith and his family returned to Highfield and was working under his son-in-law, C. Herbert McGlaughlin, when L. Calvin Smith was killed in explosion at Highfield, October 5, 1911.

On March 25, 1922, when the employees of the Western Maryland Railroad went out on a bitter union strike. C. Herbert McGlaughlin went out on strike with his men, he would not have had to do so, being a foreman. The strike cost him his job of 33 years, his retirement, and a way of life. All striking employees were replaced. His son-in-law Charles Wachter (Pete) Brown also lost his job, in the strike of 1922, while working under his father-in-law.
