Mrs. Martha Lockard, 82, of Traer died Sunday morning at the Hine Convalescent Home in Tama where she had been a patient about six years. Mrs. Lockard was born Martha Ida McKerral on April 20, 1871 in O'Dell county Illinois. She came to north Tama with her parents as a girl. The family settled in Geneseo township. The daughter Martha was married to Hiram Lockard in Traer, January 3, 1905.They farmed many years and retired in Traer. Mr. Lockard died in 1926. The couple had a son Hugh who died in infancy, and they also adopted a daughter Ruth, who married Chris Knoop. She died in 1929. Mrs. Lockard devoted many years of her life to the care of her parents and her husband, who were invalids in their last years. After the death of her husband, she was the devoted companion of the late Minnie McKerral for a number of years. She also lived with the Frank Lockard family near Toledo for a number of years until her condition required nursing care. She was an invalid for 15 years.
Her only survivors are nephews and nieces. Two brothers, John and James McKerral and a sister, Mrs. Mary Ladd, preceded her in death. Mrs. Ladd was the mother of L. H. Ladd, superintendent of the State Juvenile Home at Toledo who was reared in Traer.
The funeral services were held at the States Funeral Home here at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Paul Somerville, Methodist pastor. Shirley Dalziel sang, accompanied at the piano by Sandra Deke. Pallbearers, all from old families of the Buckingham and Geneseo communities, were Joe Raudabaugh, Herbert Speer, Oscar and Raymond Lambert, Arthur West and Merle Draper. Burial was beside her husband in Buckingham cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Currell were here for the services from Estherville, Iowa in addition to relatives from Toledo and Waterloo. Mrs. Currell is the former Marguerite McKerral, a niece of Mrs. Lockard.
