ABERNATHEY, Charley and Cora
Cora O. KORTGAARD, the daughter of Martin KORTGAARD and Anna BAGLIEN, was born on a farmstead south of Larsen, N.D. on July 11, 1918. She graduated from Columbus High School. Cora stayed with the David HOUSTON family while attending Minot Business Institute. Ellen BENNELL, a classmate of Coras and daughter of Charley's employer, arranged the first data between Charley and Cora - a blind date.
They were married October 19, 1939 at Minot. They lived on the BENNELL Dairy, in Surrey, and on the OTT Dairy before settling in Nedrose Township in 1944. Charley served on the Nedrose Township Board for many years and they both drove school bus. Charley worked for Dakota Transfer, Border Freight and Buckingham, before retiring from Midwest Motor Express in 1972.
The ABERNATHEYSs were house enthusiasts, enjoying the raising and showing of Hackney Ponies. Charley and his white burro, Jack, were in many parades in the Minot area. His hobby in later years was the rebuilding of horse sleighs and buggies. Cora still enjoyed needlework. Retired farmers, they still maintained a large garden.
Charley and Cora ABERNATHEY died on February 8, 1985. There were victims of a double homicide at their rural home as a result of an apparent robbery attempt.
