Fern Evelyn (Waugh) Salyer Cox passed away on November 6, 2012. She was born on October 18, 1919 and was the fifth child of Perry Madison and Mable Mae (Wise) Waugh born at the farm home in the Willard community in Harper County Oklahoma. She started her first year at the Willard country school. The family moved to Ashland in 1926 where Fern attended elementary school. She then moved with her family to Goodman, Missouri in 1930.

It was during this time that Fern's father died at the age of 44 years. Her mother and the five younger children moved to Rogers, Arkansas where Fern graduated from high school in 1936. She returned to Ashland with her older sister where she spent most of her life.

Fern was employed in the Elmer Broadie home for several years. In 1962 she married Kenneth Salyer and they resided on the farm just west of Ashland. She remained on the farm after Kenneth's sudden death in 1971. Fern worked at various jobs at the county courthouse and in the county road department office.

In November of 1979, Fern married Willard Cox and they resided in Ashland after Willard retired from farming. They enjoyed some traveling before Willard's passing on May 29, 2002.

Fern enjoyed flower arranging, crafts, writing poetry and cooking. She was a member of the Ashland United Methodist Church for over 50 years and a member of the garden club, Sunflower HDU, the UMW and the Red Hat Society. She was one of the two surviving members of the Circle of Friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Ruth Salyer, Luella Heiney Butterworth and Hazel Eddings, three brothers, Melvin, Carl and Charles, the spouses of her siblings, and a niece, Kathryn Miller.

Fern is survived by a step-son, Ron Cox and wife, Gloria, of Rapid City, Michigan and their family, and fourteen nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations given in Fern's name may be given to the United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 686, the Ashland Long Term Care Unit, P.O. Box 188, or the Senior Citizen Center, P.O. Box 73, all of Ashland, Kansas 67831.
