23 August 1913 The Nashville Tennessean pg 1 - OFFICERS SHOT IN MACON Deputy Sheriff Bowman Is Killed and Deputy Jones Wounded. SHOT BY CHARLIE JONES Sam Jones, Latter's Brother, Receives Bullet in One of His Legs. NEAR THE FAIR GROUNDS Slayer of Bowman in jail at Fayetteville, and Charged With Murder. LAFAYETTE, Tenn., Aug 22-(Special)-In a bloddy tragedy, which occurred here today at the entrance to the fair grounds, where the Macon county fair is being held, Deputy Sheriff John Bowman was shot and killed and Deputy Sheriff Harde Jones was shot and dangerously wounded by Charlie Jones and Sam Jones, a brother of Charlie, was shot in the leg by Deputy Sheriff Harde Jones. It was reported to the officers that there was a disturbance of some sort at the entrance to the fair grounds, Sam Jones being a factor in the trouble, and they went there to arrest him. Their attempt to arrest Sam enraged his brother and he opened fire on the officers with his revolver. Bowman was shot in the breast, then in his sides, and after he fell to the ground Charlie walked up to him and shot him throught the head, killing him instantly. Charlie Jones fired twice at Harde Jones one of the bullets striking him in his leg and the other in his side above the hip and it is supposed lodged in his hip. Harde Jones is dangerously wounded, but it is thought he may recover. No other shots were fired in the encounter except one by Deputy Sheriff Harde Jones, who shot Sam Jones in his leg. After the shooting Charlie ran to the rear of the fair grounds, where he was arrested by Sheriff Haynes. On being arrested he is reported to have said to the sheriff: "If my annunition hadn't given out I would have killed the whole bunch of officers." Charlie Jones was placed in jail, charged with first degree murder. He will be given a preliminary hearing at 10 o'clock Monday morning. Sam Jones was also arrested and placed in jail. It is said the Jones brothers had been drinking. Charlie Jones, who is a resident of this town, is an ex-convict, having been convicted about a year and a half ago of shooting at Walter Ray and sentenced to the penitentiary for one year. He was released from that institution last July. He is about 22 years of age and unmarried. His brother Sam is about 19 years old and also unmarried. John Bowman, the deputy sheriff who was killed, was about 42 years old; was aresident of this county, and is survived by his widow and five children.
