George Armstrong Lyon was born in Erie, Pennsylvania on Dec 23, 1837, the son of Rev. George Armstrong Lyon (1806 - 1871) and Mary Sterret Lyon.

He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1858 and was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1861. On Jun 21, 1877 he married Rose Vincent (1847 - 1894). They had at least one son.

He was appointed an Assistant Paymaster for the Navy on Jun 11, 1862, and rose through the ranks of Paymaster (1866), Pay Inspector (1888) and Pay Director (1898).

His duty assignments include charge of the Navy Pay Offices in Portsmouth, NH (1887 - 1890), Boston, MA (1894 - 1896) and Philadelphia (1898 - 1899).

On Dec 23, 1898 he was placed on the Retired List as Pay Director with the rank of Rear Admiral.

Admiral Lyon died in Philadelphia on Mar 6, 1914 and was buried in Erie.
