Lavern K. Thein, 90, of Waterloo, went home to be with his Lord on Nov. 9, 2012. He died at home surrounded by family, who loved him deeply.

He was born Feb. 2, 1922, in Putnam Township, Fayette County.

He married Margaret "Maggie" Kamp on June 19, 1970 in Galena, Ill.

Lavern worked for several years at FW Means (Aramark) until 1974. He then became the owner, operator and founder of Thein's Trucking and Auto Sales. Lavern also hauled hay for several years working as a Hay Jockey.

He is survived by his wife; 11 children, Charlene Poppy, Kay (Doug) Estling, Charles Thein, Jeanne Barndt, Vicky (Dexter) Greenway, Jeff Mitchell, Rodney Thein, Ronald Foxen, Ruth (Michael) Cummings, Rick (Mary) Foxen, and Regina (Darrell) Parmer; daughters-in-law, Gayle Christianson and Debra Thein (widow of Gary); a sister-in-law, Dorothy Thein (widow of Floyd); brother-in-law, Harold Squires (widower of Bernadine); many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and his dogs Pete and Sport. Lavern also is survived by very special friends Johnny and Pat Boland and Erl Brandt, and many other special friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lawrence Thein, Kenneth Thein and a sister Anna Thein, all in infancy; a brother, Floyd Thein; a sister, Bernadine Squires; a son, Gary Thein and a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Janet Sweet; a grandson, Christopher Thein and Lavern's dog Peppy.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher-Chapel on Kimball with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and an hour before services Tuesday.

Those who wish may direct memorials to the family at 223 Elk Run St. in Elk Run Heights.

Lavern will be greatly missed by all the people he touched with his sense of humor and love for his family and friends.
