On 23 September 1896 farmer Pieter Schuurmans, 32 y, arrived on the SS Southwark, which had departed from Antwerp, Belgium, with his sister Hiltje Schuurmans, 26 y, at New York, heading for Paterson, Passaic County, New Jersey, where he got with his wife Helen (Hielkje) VanderSchaaf, born in Littenseradiel too, on 5 July 1899 son Meinte and on 29 October 1900 daughter Anna Schuurmans.
About February 1901 he died at the age of 37 years in Lodi, Bergen County, New Jersey, just east of Paterson and northwest of New York, leaving his wife and two children.
