On May 1, 1953, California Highway Patrol Officer John Armatoski became the 66th CHP officer killed in the line-of-duty since the Highway Patrol was created, in 1929.

Officer Armatoski was conducting an enforcement stop on U.S. Highway 66, west of Needles, when an intoxicated motorist, driving a stolen vehicle, struck and killed him instantly.

Armatoski was assigned to the Barstow Area office at the time of his death and had been a member of the CHP for five years.

Officer Armatoski's name can be found on the National Peace Officer Memorial at Panel 26, E -1.
