Albert Merridan Huggins
HEMINGWAY – A. Merridan Huggins, a retired employee of Sales and Use Tax Division of Florence District, South Carolina Tax Commission, and a retired farmer, died Wednesday at his residence.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home, will be in the Old Johnsonville Cemetery.
Mr. Huggins was born Feb. 8, 1919, in Williamsburg County, a son of Albert True Huggins and Ellen Volena Haselden Huggins. He was a graduate of Hemingway High School and Florence Commercial College. He was an Army veteran of World War II and received the Bronze Star, six battle stars, Combat Infantry Badge, Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal and European Campaign Medal. He was retired from the South Carolina National Guard. He was a member of the Ebenezer Methodist Church, where he was assistant Sunday school superintendent, chairman of the board for 12 years and lay leader for 7 years. He was a member of the Indiantown Masonic Lodge 165.
Surviving are his wife, Harriette Ackerman Huggins; two daughters, Merry Jo Underwood of Panama and Anne Lane of Charleston; a son, Billy Huggins of Columbia; a brother, Harry W. Huggins of Hemingway; four grandchildren.
