Mitchi Joseph Hecomovich, Jr.
Mitchi Joseph Hecomovich, Jr., 94, died Feb. 27, 2009. He was
born Sept. 16, 1914 in Taconite, Minn. To Mitchi Joseph Hecomovich
Helen Mazar Hecomovich.
He graduated from Greenway High School in Coleraine, Minn. In 1933.
He worked in the iron mines to earn the money to attend Itasca College
for two years.
He started his sports center career as a child. He attended Connecticut
State on basketball and baseball scholarship for a season. He played
Baseball for the Winnipeg Maroons for the summer of 1937. He eventually
went to the University of Minnesota where he earned a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Education.
He was a physical fitness instructor in the U.S. Navy and was stationed
In the Atlantic, Caribbean and the Mediterranean. His last active duty
Station was Bremerton, Wash., where he stayed until his discharge in 1946.
He stayed in Bremerton to play pro baseball for a season and on his way
to Minnesota he stopped in Spokane for a job fair and got offered a teaching
position in White Salmon.
He taught in White Salmon from 1946-55, in Glenwood from 1957-64 and then
Returned to teaching in White Salmon until his retirement in 1977. During
His teaching career he also coached football, basketball and baseball. He was
Also an officiator and was inducted into the Washington Officiating Association
Hall of Fame in 2004.
He married Olga Jane Kreps in 1951. The couple loved helping their community,
Square dancing and gardening together.
Mr. Hecomovich was actively involved with the Catholic Church, Knight of Columbus,
The Elks, American Legion, Washington Officiating Association, Retired Teacher's
Association, Washington Cattlemen's Association, The University of Minnesota
Alumni Association, Itasca Community College Alumni Association and the Square
Dance Club president.
In 1999 a baseball field (Hec Field) was dedicated the Hecomovich. The Hecomovich
Endowment Fund was established recently by the Hecomovich's to benefit
athletic programs in the White Salmon Valley School District.
He is survived by his wife OJ Hecomovich, three brothers, three sisters, and
numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Mar. 4, 2009 at the Columbia High School gymnasium.
