Jesse Boswell Bass Sr. was born in Darlington County, South Carolina, the son of Josiah Bass (1805-1882) and Sarah Boswell (c1810-c1835). He married c1853 to Frances Rhodes (1834-1893), daughter of Curtis Rhodes (1808-1863) and Queenie Goodson (1813-1885). On the 1860 census his occupation was listed as overseer. During the Civil War he served in Co. D, 1st SC Infantry, CSA. The family moved to Faulkner County, Arkansas, c1869. Following his wife Frances' death he remarried to Nancy (Killough) Reynolds (1840-1901), the daughter of William Killough (c1798-1877) and Elizabeth Bybee (c1810-c1880).

Jesse and Frances were the parents of nine children:
1. James Henry Bass (1854-1933)
2. Sarah Theodocia Bass Acklin Stevenson (1856-1924)
3. William Joseph Bass (1860-1948)
4. Queenie Isabella Bass Ruple (1861-1925)
5. Jesse Boswell Bass Jr. (1863-1943)
6. John Calvin Bass (1866-1906)
7. Charles Bass (1866- ????)
8. Frances Adellah Bass Kelley (1867-1896)
9. Margaret Lou Bass Newberry (1876-1958)
