I. P. BARNARD, 83, CAPITALIST, DIES
Confederate Veteran Had Been in Ill Health Since October
I. P. Barnard, 83 years old, retired capitalist and veteran of the War Between the States, died at 11:00 Saturday morning at his home, 1128 Cherokee Road. Mr. Barnard was removed to his home two weeks ago from the Kentucky Baptist Hospital, where he had been under treatment for ten weeks.
Mr. Barnard was president of the Barnard Realty Company, which he organized in 1924 to handle his extensive real estate holdings in Louisville, and secretary of the Beaver Dam Coal Company. He also held interests in other coal mines and businesses in the States.
Born in Ohio County, the son of Josiah C. Barnard and Rhoda Brown Barnard, Mr. Barnard enlisted in Company C, Ninth Kentucky Regiment, Confederate Army, at the age of 15. He served four years and was mustered out in Washington, Ga, in 1865.
Operated Store ---
After the War, he returned to Ohio County where he operated a country store for seven years. Later, he went to Beaver Dam, where he opened a general store and a tobacco and coal business, remaining there ten years. He organized the Beaver Dam Deposit Bank and was president and director of that institution.
In 1885, Mr. Barnard came to Louisville and organized the Edwards, Barnard & Co., tobacco warehouse. He was one of the organizers of the Louisville Tobacco Warehouse in 1896, and was a director until 1900, when he became president, a position he held until 1914.
He was married in 1868 to Miss Bettie Bell of Ohio County, who died on July 13, of this year. his son, A. P. Barnard, died February 19. Two daughters, Mrs. B. S. Clarkson and Mrs. G. G. Neel, are his only immediate survivors.
Rites to be Monday -----
Mr. Barnard served as adjutant general of the United Confederate Veterans, and belonged to the Louisville Lodge of Elks. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 Monday afternoon at the residence. Burial will be in Cave Hill Cemetery….
