His obituary had two errors.

Age 83 in March 1949 would have placed his birth in 1865. A photo of his headstone exists on ancestry.com from a family member in the area, and it shows the date on his gravestone agrees with the 1865 date.

His wife was Ida Laue, not Ida Lane; as confirmed by obituaries of four of five of their children (the obituary of son Rudy Lucas spelled her name "Lowe").

Fred W. Lucas, 83, died Wednesday (March 2, 1949) at 11 p.m. at his farm home 6 miles northwest of Burlington on Highway 61 after being in falling health for a year.

He had been blind for 27 years as a result of a farm accident.

He was born July 4, 1868 (sic), in Germany, the son of Christ and Maria Schulze Lucas and came to the U.S. with his parents when he was 2. He had lived his entire life on the farm where be died. On May 14, 1896, he married Ida Lane (sic: Laue) in Burlington. Be was a member of St. John's Evangelical & Reformed church.

Surviving are the widow; 2 daughters and 3 sons, all of Des Moines county, Mrs. Selma Drebenstedt, Mrs. Esther Hummer, Clarence, Harry, and Rudolph; 24 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. His parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters are dead.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul Evangelical & Reformed church, West Burlington. Reverend Ralph Hunger will officiate. Burial will be in St. John's cemetery in Flint River township. The body will remain at the Fry funeral home, Mediapolis, until time for services.
