Ralph Frank Maze was born Ralph Frank Mazza in White Rock, Marion County, West Virginia. He married Roberta Ellen 'Bobbie' Kelley on June 20, 1946 after having survived the April 1942 Bataan Death March in the Philippines and being held as a Prisoner Of War there and in Japan while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He remained in the Corps, making it a career and ultimately retired with 40 years of government service after he joined the U.S. Postal Service upon being released from active duty. Their marriage produced three children: Ronald Lee 'Butch" (1947-2011), James Lee "Jimmy" II (b: 1955), and William Edward (1956-1956). He was the second of six children in his family. His paternal uncle, Gilbert (1900-1985), led the successful effort to have the family's surname name changed from Mazza to Maze between the murder of his paternal grandfather, who had immigrated from Italy, in 1923 and the 1930 U.S. Census. In addition to his honorable military service during World War II he was on active duty during both the Korean and Vietnam War eras .
