Donald was a graduate of North East High School and attended Gannon College. He retired from General Electric after 44 years as an electrical engineer. He was a member of the Crossroads Community Baptist Church for 56 years. He was Director of the GEAA and President of the GE Control Association. He was a secretary of two GE bowling leagues for 39 years and played softball for 15 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, Florida and world traveling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy Jares Akin, (m 31 years); his second wife, Betty Ann Downing Akin, (m 12 years); and a son, Douglas Sutherland Akin.
He is survived by two daughters, Laurie Ann Zamperini, and her husband John, of Reynoldsville, Pa. and Sandra M. Johnston and her husband Scott, of Lancaster, Pa.; a brother, James M. Akin, Gaithersburg, Md.; and a dearest friend, Rita S. Rapp, of Erie. Further survived by seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Burial will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
