Charles Willis Ransom was born in Madison County, New York, the son of Charles R. and Margarett Jennette Ransom. The family came to Minnesota in 1869. Charles Willis Ransom married Miss Mary Louise Walsh at at Columbus, Wisconsin, in July 1879. He established a wholesale grocery business, Ransom Brothers, at Albert Lea in 1880, which was incorporated as Ransom Brothers Company in 1893. He served as the firm's president and manager until 1901 when he sold the company to Western Grocery Company. He organized the Western Mutual Fire Insurance Company in 1894, and was president and manager until 1897. In 1897 he organized the Consolidated Fire and Marine Insurance Company, serving as president until 1910. He was director of both the First National Bank of Albert Lea, and the Albert Lea State Bank. In 1910 he moved to Houston, Texas, where he resided until his death.
