James Bernard Shannon, better known as Bernnie to his relatives and friends, was born June 18, 1886 at Gaylord, Kansas
He was one of seven children born to William G. Shannon and Jennie Bacon Shannon.
On March 13, 1913, he was united in marriage with Sarah Zalman, at her parents home. This union was blessed with three children, who mourn the passing of their father. They are Marvel (Mrs. Ed Ryan) of Hastings, Oral of Glasglow, Montana and Don of Red Cloud. Bernnie and his family enjoyed rural living and doing commercial trucking, and many ears were spent on farms near Red Cloud and Lebanon, Kansas.
His wife passed away suddenly March 3, 1948. In 1949 he moved to Hastings and was employed at the Naval Depot. In 1957 he moved to Gore, Oklahoma. He resided there until Easter Sunday of 1969, when ill health caused his children to move him to Red Cloud, where he greatly enjoyed the friendship of his relatives and friends. He was of a sunny disposition and enjoyed many friends where ever he lived.
Beside his children, he leaves 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Their welfare and his love for them were uppermost in his mind. His grandchildren are: Jimmy and Jackie Shannon, Marlyce Cramer, Kathy Kucera and Bob and Mike Shannon. He also leaves a sister and brother Mrs. George Engstrom of Red Cloud and Walter Shannon and wife Sarah of Drumright, Oklahoma. Also nephews, nieces and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 13 from the Simonson Funeral Chapel with Rev. E. E. Cummings officiating. Music was furnished b Mrs. Mildred Rogers and Mrs. Marie Cummings who sang "Old Rugged Cross" and "Beyond the Sunset." They were accompanied by Mrs. Sylvia Beams, organist.
Pallbearers were: Dale Engstrom, Luke Gouldie, Harold Shannon, Glen Zalman, Melvin Anderson and Mick Mathew.
Interment was in the Red Cloud cemetery.
