Merle was one of four children, including Letha and twins Gail and Grace. She grew up in Iowa City, Iowa, in the house built by her grandfather, brick merchant Nicholas Oakes. The artist Grant Wood later lived in and restored the house.

Merle was married on October 5, 1917 in Ada, Idaho, and lived in Boise much of her adult life. She and Wright had two children, Wright Oakes (1921-1963) and Wallace Oliver.
